Abstract
Bone is one of the most well-known biological hybrid materials. It consists of two different structures, organic and inorganic. The protein that makes up the organic part is collagen, and the inorganic part is made up of different minerals such as hydroxyapatite, calcium carbonate, silica, or iron hydroxides(1). Mineralized collagen fibrils are organized into higher-order structures ranging from the sub-micrometer to the macroscopic scale in the hierarchical architecture of bones(2). This hierarchical structure of bone is critical for understanding both bone production mechanisms and how mechanical qualities are derived from the content and placement of its building pieces. Wet spinning is based on the principle of non-solvent-induced phase formation, in which a polymeric solution is injected into a coagulation bath consisting of a weak solvent or a non-solvent/solvent mixture of polymer precipitated as a paste(3). With this method, it is possible to produce fibers with a diameter of tens to hundreds of micrometers. The difference between the absorption of left- and right-handed circularly polarized light by the collection of peptide bond chromophores in a protein is measured by CD spectroscopy. The distinctive supercoiled polyproline type II secondary structure of the protein backbone in the case of the triple helix displays distinct CD transitions, including a positive band at 222 nm and a negative band at 195 nm(4). It is well known method to investigate the secondary structure of collagen molecules. In this study, we are going to employ the wet spinning process to produce collagen fibers and use three different methods to mineralize collagen bundles. The mineralized collagen fibers structures will be compared among themselves and natural mineralized tissues.
